After a 7 hour bus journey listening to the Cambodian karoke we arrived at Siem Reap. We hopped on a tuk-tuk and the driver introduced himself as "Mr Bean" and asked him to take us to a guesthouse after looking at about 3 or 4 we settled with one for $11 a night a little more than we wanted to pay but was worth the extra.
Theres plenty to do at night ; lots of bars and restaurants but it was quite expensive so not too many late nights.
So our first full day we had arranged with "Mr Bean" to pick us up at 10am and to take us to the Temples of Angkor.
First he took us to buy the tickets, they were $40 each for a 3 day pass and they print your picture on them as if you get caught without a ticket its a $100 fine! He took us on the mini tour which you visit the Angkor Thom Temple, Bayon Temple (this is one with faces carved in the stones) and Ta Prohm (the one they used in the Tomb Raider film).
Finally we visited the mighty Angkor Wat which is said to be the worlds largest single religious monument, and believe me its huge. It was a hard day pretending to be Lara Croft
The second day Mr Bean was meant to pick us up at 9am however he was busy so he sent his friend Siat (think thats right) and he took us on the grand tour which are temples a bit further out of Siem Reap. We visited Preah Khan, Banteay Srey, Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong. All these temples were brilliant we took so many pictures. (We went through them on the night and deleted LOADS so imagine how many they were to begin with!)
Every temple you look round you are met by an army of children (and im talking as young as 5years old ) selling everything from drinks, paintings, bracelets, scarfs and books. They all say the same things:
"Where you from?",
"10 bracelets $1" (i even got even got offered 15 for $1 bargain!),
"I will remeber you" (and, of course, they do!! they wait for you and when you come out they start giggling and continue to follow & pester you)
They also try to play games with you , like Noughts & Crosses and if you lose you buy! Beth said I wasnt allowed to play as i suck at that game!!)
They know facts about the country you're from;
"the capital of England is London"
The funniest thing is when they say "Population of England 63million ....minus two - Do you know why?...because you two are here!" (this is then followed by a them trying to sell you something or wanting a "donation")
Overall Siem Reap was a great place but after a few days we needed to move on as our money was slipping away!! We are heading to the south of Cambodia to Sihanoukville to do some beaching.
Hope your all well and not getting snowed in...xxxxxx
