Today was another nice day to walk, not too hot, just right, they were calling for rain but we are hoping it holds out until tonight. We started our walk from Trasteveres, stopped in to visit Basilica Santa Maria which is one of the oldest churches of Rome. The church has large areas of important mosaics from the late 13th century, as you can see in my photos you could not tell from the outside what beauty was inside the Basilica. We continued our walk through tiny narrow cobblestone streets until we reached the Tiber River and walked along the river until we reached Castel Sant' Angelo which was the Pope's retreat in troubled times. The circular castle is a short and protected walk from the Vatican. It took us approximately one hour, nice walk, I really had to get Tom to slow down, I am getting old. The line ups to get into the Vatican Museum were quite long so we decided not to wait in line and continue walking through Vatican City and then back to Trasteveres taking a different walking route home for a brief rest.
