Adventures of a Global Wanderer
This morning I was leaving Iceland after my weekend in Reykjavik. Despite the rain I had really enjoyed it and can see myself coming back. It has a small town feel like Quebec City and there are lots of natural things to do outside the city.
I didn't do the northern lights as its subject to weather so I would need a few days to pick the best night. Also there are the thermal springs to go bathing, whale watching tours, hiking, horse riding and other outdoor activities. I plan to come back again possibly with friends this time as its only 4 hrs from Toronto.
Last night it had been noisy with a loud group of French tourists, banging the room doors, talking loud, laughing as they head out for dinner. I had to be up early as my flight was 8am so I needed to be at the airport before 7am and catch a 6am bus from the terminal.
I left the hotel 510am and got the 530am bus which was surprisingly almost full at this early hour. After exchanging my Iceland money back to Euros we left at 8am. I had landed in dark and this time it was quite cloudy so I still didn't get to see Iceland by air.
Icelandair charges for all meals even on long haul flights so I had my own snacks. The emergency video was interesting. Rather than a boring stand in the aisle and show you how to inflate the life vest they made it interesting by blending it in with their landscape to illustrate emergency landings or sliding down to life rafts.
This flight was going to Bergen Norway but would continue further north to Trondheim. For whatever reason there was no price difference if I got off at Bergen or went all the way to Trondheim. Since I had planned on going to Trondheim anyway I booked the flight all the way at no extra cost.
On arrival at Bergen we had clear skies and I remembered the coastline from my last visit in 2003. On arrival I didn't know if we had to deplane, clear immigration, and reboard since we were coming on an international flight and then becoming domestic. I didn't want to take my bags and go thru security again.
Fortunately we got to sit on the plane but they went thru a bizarre process of checking the overhead luggage to make sure nobody getting off at Bergen had forgot their bags.
This time a loud Chinese group had got on. They were going to Iceland and were getting panicky when the plane first went to Trondheim. Again we had perfect clear skies to enjoy the Norway coastline, snowtop peaks, and mountain summit lakes.
On arrival at Trondheim it clouded over but we did get to see valley and coastal communities thru the clouds. There was no passport or immigration on arrival even though we had flown from Iceland.
Wikitravel said to take the half hourly train instead of the more expensive airport bus. The station looked like it was closed as they were building a new platform but temporary entrance was further down.
Ticket from the vending machine was 74K ($15) vs the bus at 120K ($22) one way. There is one platform so you have to make sure you board the train going in the right direction as I almost boarded the wrong one which arrived first.
Curiously we passed thru a town called 'Hell' and our conductor was a friendly lady with ponytails.
The hotel was easy to find a short walk from the station, which was at the city marina. The hotel was an old historic building and the room was giant sized and could be an entire apartment.
It also overlooked the city Royal Palace which is a museum so lots of privacy after hours. Because of my very early morning flight I just passed out in the luxurious room after several days of not getting a goods nights sleep to recharge for my next full day in Trondheim.
Later I heard some drunks coming out the bars singing. I couldn't sleep so was watching Swedish TV channels we were getting along with Norweigan
