Adventures of a Global Wanderer
The next part of the tour and most exciting part was to a visit to the Geysir Field. This was discovered about a century ago when a giant geysir suddenly erupted. It now erupts regularly on average 9 min intervals.
Fortunately the rain had also stopped as this was somewhere you need to spend long periods outdoors observing.
The area is famous for the giant geysir but there are actually many geysirs of various sizes. Some erupt, others very seldom, or some not at all. However, the field is covered in rising mist vapours from the various geysirs.
Most people will gather at first around the base of the large geysir. You can see the central crater and the water slowly bubbling like when milk comes to a boil. Then a large central bulge will appear with more vapours. Suddenly the large one will shoot several stories into the air.
Its quite a spectacle and you cant photograph it on the first try, hence the large crowds gathered with cameras and tripods. The trick is to use the fast shutter burst if your camera has the option. My setting was for 4 frames per second although I could have set it faster.
To get a better vantage point you have to go further up away from the central crater. However as you are now not at the foot you cant see the water bubbling so have no idea when it will erupt, so fingers ready on the camera.
Normally it will do a single burst anywhere from 4 mins to 10 min intervals. On one occasion it did a double burst which nobody was prepared for. Even rarer as we were leaving it did a triple burst and seemed to splatter all the nearby gathering onlookers.
This was a good place to spend a good hour and half and the highlight of the day. Fortunately the rain was also co-operating though the drizzle moved back by the time we were leaving.
Surprisingly there is no admission fee and anyone can just drive up. There are restaurants, souvenir shops and hotels to make a day of it.
There was also a museum, marketed as 'free' with tour package, though its just one side of the souvenir shop and restaurant and anyone can enter. We did however get coupons to use in the gift shop and restaurant so I bought some souvenir chocolates for people at work for 450k ($4.50).
