Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today was my first fill day in Trondheim which is not really a big tourist destination in favour of the southern cities of Bergen and Norway. Having done some research however I thought it would be worth it and would be some variety from the popular southern touristy cities.
I passed by an old church from 1730 where they were holding a morning meeting for some local immigrants.
I was heading to the historic wharf area and had perfect clear weather. I'd seen photographs and it was impressive seeing the buildings reflected in the waters.
Aside from the original wharf area it stretches in different directions. There is the new wharf area, and closer to the station the modern residential area with modern riverside apartments.
Across the river from the wharf was the hilltop fortress where my book said you have the best city views. There was an innovative free bike lift for the city's many cyclists.
After a steep climb to the fortress there wasn't much to see as its facing the wrong way and there are lots of trees to see much of the city.
I was able to see Munkholmen Island where the old prison was. The ferries are seasonal and had already stopped running.
After walking down I walked thru some of the old town at the foot of the fortress by the old wharf area.
I was very impressed with Trondheim and glad I made the special effort to come here. It was tourist free and much more impressive than photos I had seen of Bergen's historic harbour.
