From L.A. we caught a greyhound bus 3 hours south to San Diego. We arrived at 2pm and walked in the sun through the town to our hostel. San Diego was alot smaller and prettier than L.A. and had a wonderful mexican vibe to it. We checked into our 6 bed dorm and here we met Jake, he was from Seattlle and travelling America on his bike. Two Aussie girls we met in L.A., Kathryn and Siobhan, were also at the same hostel and so we started our stay with tacos and drinks with our new friends.
The following day was Halloween and the hostel had been decorated with pumpkins and cobwebs. We spent the day at a farmers market in an area called Ocean beach where we enjoyed the halloween decorations and costumes and trying free tasters of the local foods. We bought take away curry, rice and samosas from one of the stalls for our dinner. Before leaving, our visit to the market ended dramatically when a guy punched another guy for giving a flower to his girlfriend. The San Diego emergency services responded to this with an ambulance, a fire truck and 4 police cars. Amazingly the guy still managed to get away! After getting back to the hostel and rummaging through their Halloween costume box we dressed up in our thrown together outfits and began our Halloween night in San Diego. Ben had put on a scary, old-fashioned, well worn, Victorian style dress complete with tangled grey wig and I was in a witches outfit with shawl and hat. We were joined by Jake in a similar dress to Bens, the Aussie girls as "cereal" killers, Paul (a guy from southern England, who we also met in L.A.) as Russel Brand and a few others in just as imaginative outfits. We headed out onto the streets of San Diego, which were crammed with people all dressed up in crazy outfits.....we've never seen anything like it! We had a great night out in the bars and after returned to the hostel for more drinks and pizza.
The following day was a recovery day and so we did very little. However, we did find the energy to do some pumpkin carving with mini pumpkins and took photos of the finished products:-)
On our third day in San Diego we took a 20 minute bus with Jake to the Coronado island. We had been told that Coronado had beautiful beaches and we were not disappointed. We walked along the white sand of the wide beach and down to the sea. We sat on the sand and enjoyed the view before heading up to the town for drinks in a local cafe. We had a quiet night as the next day we had booked on a trip with the hostel to Tijuana, Mexico.
Most of the hostel were going to Tijuana, so we all set off in a big group to catch the trolley(tram), which would take us straight to the Mexican border. The trolley journey was around 40 minutes, we got off at the other side and followed a pathway, which led through to Mexico. We started the visit off with a trip to a bar for Mexican beers, cocktails and a few games of pool. Afterwards we walked through the lively streets of Tijuana and to a restaurant for burritos and tequila. We finished off with more drinks, more tequila and most of the lads in the group had a go on the mechanical bull:-)
Our last full day in San Diego was spent recovering from the night before and then taking a trip back to Ocean Beach to catch an amazing sunset.
