We arrived in Washington DC at 7.30am. It had been a long night on the Amtrak train and we hadn't slept as much as we'd hoped, mainly due to the ridiculously cold air con. We pulled into the station, gathered our things and climbed down onto the platform. The cold air hit us immediately and we had to adjust to the winter temperatures pretty quickly. We caught the subway to our hostel and were pleased to find that it was lovely and warm inside. Unfortunately we couldn't check in until 3pm so we left our bags in the luggage area, grabbed a quick shower and then went to explore DC. Considering that we were feeling quite tired after our long train journey we managed to walk around and see quite a lot of the city. We wrapped up warm and then started at the post office building where we ascended the tower to see the city from above. Next we walked around to the White House and down to the Washington Monument, both were very impressive. We then walked along the Mall, passing all the memorials, and went inside the modern art gallery and the museum of air and space. By this point we were feeling very tired and cold, so we finished off by walking around to the Capitol building and then went to Starbucks to warm up.
At 3.30pm we checked into to our 4 bed dorm (our last dorm of the trip!) and unpacked (again!). That evening we made spag bol for tea and had a couple of drinks with a few of the other people staying at the hostel.
The next day we set off in search of Americas best cupcakes in Georgetown. Georgetown itself was very pretty with lots of little shops and festive decorations everywhere. We eventually found Georgetown cupcakes and were amazed by all the different types available. It was just too much to only pick one so we opted for a box of 6 so we could choose 3 each:-). We walked down to the Lincoln memorial and found a table to enjoy our cupcakes....delicious. We spent the afternoon walking around the different memorials and passed the Monument just as the sun was setting, turning the sky bright orange.
The next day we caught a bus north to Philadelphia where we transferred to a local bus and continued on to Atlantic City. We spent two days in Atlantic City where we walked along the boardwalk and went in a couple of casinos. We had another go at blackjack and roulette....no luck again though.
Our next and final stop is New York before we jet off home for Christmas!
