Karijini to Port Hedland - 25th July
To quote from Trishy's diary - "Gorgeous ride through National Park green hills, jagged red outcrops, through passes of layered red ironstone rocks to the Auski Roadhouse". Here we grabbed a bit of food to see us through to Port Hedland. The road in was very busy with huge roadtrains but not a problem for two bikes on the straight open roads. Even with all these trucks our roads are in such great condition unlike the back breaking crunching roads in Queensland.
On arrival in Port Hedland we found out that there were no tent sites available that day so we took a night in the bunkhouse at $130 for the night and booked a powered site for the next few days. With the trailer tyres now having done about 35,000km and wearing unevenly it was time to replace them. So I headed off to organize that while Trish got stuck into the washing as it was time to get the red dust of Karijini out of everything.
Being a Thursday and knowing the unusual size of the trailer tyres I knew that there was not a quick fix for their replacement. Once the tyre guy, who is mainly dealing in huge truck tyres, stopped laughing after I told him the size, he got on the phone and appeared very helpful. Phone call sounded good, fitting time was marked into the work diary for Monday morning. I left thinking that it was not too bad since they had to come from Perth. Time to relax and enjoy Port Hedland for 4 days.
We even timed it right for Port Hedland's full moon - Stairway to Heaven - viewing. I think they were cashing in on Broome's one but it wasn't too bad and there were a lot of other tourist out there to see it.
We could be in a worse place to spend 4 days waiting, very good park great camp kitchen and amenities.
