Coral Bay
16th to 23rd March 2014
After leaving the flies behind at Hamelin Pool we were off to Coral Bay via Carnarvon. A quick stop in Carnarvon for fuel and vegetables then back on the road. As we were the first to arrive, even though we had been overtaken by Kobie three times, it was time to get the keys and settle in. Being generous and also "Almost Intrepids" we gave the Queen size bed to Loris and Josie. The cabin looks very comfortable and we would be able to push the single beds together at night.
Everything is very close. 300 metres to the beach, 200 metres to the pool and 300 metres to the shops.
Our days have revolved around get up and breakfast followed by a swim then snorkelling, then back to the pool to wash off the salt, top up with a bit of lunch then back to the pool, afternoon drinks then tea and finally sleep only to repeat the process the next day. It is so relaxing and with 15 of us in total it is a great family time.
The Coral and fish are not as good as they use to be but it is still very convenient only having to walk 300m then slip into the water for snorkelling. Apparently a very bad coral spawning a couple of years back saw all the spawn from the reef blown into the bay which then de-oxygenated the water and kill a lot of the fish and coral. Ironic really that a natural process would have such a devastating effect. The good thing is it is recovering and getting back to normal.
Trish and I decided to book a tour on the Coral Breeze sailing catamaran out to the outer reef for a half day snorkelling. Sailing out without the noise of motors was great and we were soon in the water and heading for where we might see turtles. Out there the coral and fish were as it used to be in near the town. Then we started to spot turtles with a count somewhere between 5 and 8 as they move around a bit and are a little bit hard to keep and accurate count on them. Trish was loving her prescription goggles that we bought. It was cheaper to buy a pair than to hire for a few days.
So the routine of eat, swim, snorkel, eat, swim, drink, eat and sleep have become the our way of life up here. And loving it!
Eight days at Coral Bay have flown and all the family will return home while we take the time to finish our trip.

Richard Hancock Hi Dave Sounds like you had a great time. We're planning to go to Coral Bay in a couple of weeks, but we had a bad experience with flies about ten years ago and we can't remember what time of the year it was. Were there many flies at Coral Bay when you were there recently? Your blog about flies in Shark Bay brought back memories. Richard
Trish Bensley Hi Richard, we didn't see many flies if any at Coral Bay, end of March. Though we were covered in the horrid little flies at Shell Beach, and at Hamelin Pool. I think this has something to do with the saltiness of the environment there, only flies can live there.
