Sandfire and the Spitting Camel. Tuesday 10 September 2013
Dave and I rode out of Derby just after 7am, with a 476km journey ahead of us. We decided to lash out and spend $60 on a basic donga room at the Sandfire Roadhouse, which is in the middle of hot dry bush country. Well, it was rather basic, with 2 little single beds and an air conditioner that rattled and roared so loudly that it drowned out our snoring! Oh well, it was better than being suffocatingly hot. Both of us woke up through the night worrying about being bitten by tiny bugs, wishing we were sleeping on our own clean tent gear, but no harm done…we must have been imagining the bities.
The shower area was nice and clean though, and we enjoyed a good pub style meal of fish and chips and salad. Before dinner I went up to a fence and was happily chatting to a big camel with a huge horned steer next to him, no problem. It was only afterwards that some people showed me the big sign that I hadn't seen (what's new there?) warning about this camel being very aggressive and a big spitter, so keep away. The beast liked me, so I was lucky.
Tomorrow we have a big ride of 524km to get to Karratha.
