KALGOORLIE: MUSEUM DAY: FRIDAY 12 JULY 2013
Dave and I woke up to a freezing cold morning, listening to rain pattering on our tent outside. Because our little electric fan heater had broken the night before, we stayed huddled in our feather sleeping bags, as there is no point in shivering in a flimsy tent too early in the morning.
I did my yoga stretchies in the camp kitchen instead of outside because the ground was awash with rain. I wouldn't have done this if there were campers in there eating breakfast, but the coast was clear for an intrepid Nanna doing her morning moves on her yoga mat.
We had planned on riding to Kambalda for lunch, but rain and cold changed our minds, and we went into Kalgoorlie town to see the WA Museum instead. A giant mine shaft headframe is outside and we had a very enjoyable time looking at all the goldfields exhibits inside. There was even a very good free museum tour for us. I especially enjoyed seeing the big gold vault with lots of real golden nuggets, gold bars, miners' jewellery and lovely real gold specimens found embedded in different types of rock. Drool drool!
We then had to ride around trying to find a little electric fan heater, harder to find than hen's teeth, as every shop said they had sold out, due to the cold rainy spell. Finally found a heater at a Hardly Normal…oops, Harvey Norman store. Happiness will reign in our tent tonight!
At 6pm our lovely tall nephew Brenton picked us up in his car to have tea at my sister Mary's place in Boulder, and we found Mary's daughter Rachel and little Superman Aiden also there. We dined on delicious spaghetti Bolognese with red wine for company, and were later delivered home to our little yurt safely by gallant Brenton.
Tomorrow morning it is pack up time to ride up to Leonora for a few days's exploring.
Intrepid Trish. J
