Dave & Trish's Oz Adventure - Skype dave50_trish50
Saturday 31 March:
We rode to Strathalbyn which is a historic little town full of beautiful old Scottish heritage buildings, and lots of antique shops. I left my moto guzzi at Garage Motorcycles to get a 20,000km service done on her, to be picked up on Monday.
We browsed antique shops….some were just full of junk, others had interesting things. Dave hones in on old cameras and rare photos, and I hone in on old jewellery.
Later, back in our Tardis Tent, it was great to have a Skype session with Adrian and Helen and to see 2 gorgeous little grandaughters playing…and to hear about Rebecca's happy 6th birthday party today.
Sunday 1st April: We had a walking day along the beachfront to Victor Harbor town museums and really enjoyed learning some local history. This was an old whaling town site in the 1800s. We walked out to Granite Island and enjoyed stunning views of the Southern Ocean. There usually is a tram track out to the island with trams pulled by big gentle Clydesdale horses, but the tram jetty is being repaired, so I missed taking photos for the grandkids.
It is school holidays in these parts and the caravan park has filled up with lovely families and plenty of cute happy kids. A big jumping pillow (looks like an inverted bouncy castle) is keeping them happy. The heated swimming pool is good too…even we got our togs wet swimming.
I know this is a bit mean but I laughed when a little boy was staring at me in all my motorbike gear and our bikes and he tripped over as he wasn't looking where he was going..…he didn't hear me cackling inside my helmet. We are getting lots of attention because of our bikes, trailer and tent setup. (And the little boy was ok!)
Monday 2 April: Happy birthday to my Joe!
I was Dave's pillion for most of the day as we rode to see sights around the Fleurieu Peninsula. We saw a big hill called the Bluff where old-timer whalers spotted poor whales doomed to a violent harpoon death, and we saw a pod of 8 dolphins out in the sea. We had binoculars to get a great view of them.
Then off to Cape Jervis to see the Kangaroo Island ferry come in with lots of people driving off in their cars. As it was going to cost us $260 with one motorbike, we deemed Kangaroo Island too expensive for us poor old Seniors! We are getting Seniors discounts in museums…most only charge $4 anyway.
Then Dave and I rode on to Rapid Bay which is like a strange little ghost town with a caravan park on the shores. Used to be a limestone mine there. No shops for coffee or lunch, so off we went to Normanville for lunch…a nice little port town. Then we rode on through great but bumpy roads to see "Glacier Rock"….it's rather hard to imagine how this country was covered in ice millions of years ago, and how forces scraped grooves in the rocks, which erosion eventually uncovered for us to see.
We then rode back up to Strathalbyn to pick up my bike, heading back home for a yummy cooked camp kitchen meal. My bike felt a bit jumpy to ride home the 54km…..and it cost a Fortune to have its service done! Hmmm.
