Hilary and I had the remains of last nights pizza for breakfast. Not such a bad start to the day - but we are unlikely to make it a habit. Chris and I walked across the road for our next little adventure: black water rafting. We were each kitted out with an all over wet suit, a large rubber ring and a hard hat with an integrated headlamp. We looked like Michelin men! The rubber rings came in various sizes; we each had to choose one that fitted over our bottoms as we would be sitting in these rings as we travelled down the underground rivers of the Waitomo Caves. We did some practice backwards jumps into a creek, with our backsides sticking out of the rubber rings, and with eels for company, and then descended into the underground cave system with our guide. After walking through a series of caves and underground streams, and doing a number of backward jumps into rock pools, we eventually arrived at an underground river through which we drifted on our rubber rings. Our guide told us all to turn off our headlamps. In the dark we saw, for the first time in our lives, the amazing sight of glow worms above us. Returned to the base to struggle out of our wet suits, have a hot shower and a warming cup of soup. A great experience. Hilary and Gill also saw glow worms today but they did it the boring way - in the dry, in a boat. After lunch we hit the road to travel to our next destination of Whakpapa.
