Dave & Hilary's NZ Adventure
On our way to Omapere we stopped at Kaikohe to take a look at the Hone Heke monument. We expected this to be in honour of the famous, local Maori chief of the mid-nineteenth century. It turned out to be for his grand nephew, of the same name, who was the local Maori chief in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Fascinating to learn that he became a lawyer and an MP and used these positions to further Maori interests. An admirable case of using the British system to beat it!
