Day 10 - Another fine & sunny - having some luck with the weather. We headed out of Irvine along a very scenic coastal road for about 70 miles. Stopped for a look at Castle Kennedy then on to the nearby Glenluce Abbey. These were ruins of what was once an abbey dating back to the 16th century. A well kept piece of history. Day 9 - We woke to a fine day and headed out of Portree about 9am. A hour's drive saw us at Ardvasar, a small town in the south west of Skye where we hopped on a ferry for a 30 minute crossing to the mainland town of Mallaig. An hour's drive gave us our first glimpse of UK's highest mountain Ben Nevis. We drove to the end of the Gorge of Glen Nevis, then walked up the gorge a further 1km to a spectacular waterfall. Day 8 - We were on the road about 10.30(a late start) out of Ullapool passing several large lochs and stopping at Dornie to visit the Eilean Donan Castle. It sits on the meeting point of three sea lochs on the west coast of Scotland on an island in Loch Duich and joins the mainland via a stone walk bridge. Day 7 - Left the town of Wick (up on the north east coast of Scotland) and headed for the town of John O'Groat. A short drive from there took us to the most north easterly point of the UK called Duncasby Head. The area has a working lighthouse as well as old buildings from WW2 were soldiers lived who kept a watch out for enemy shipping. We followed the coast west towards Durness.
