Tender boat from Ship to shore. Then cable car to Fira at the top of the crater. It is such a pretty island with the whitewashed buildings but a lot of steps. The tourist season has not really started yet so there are plenty of buildings being painted. It looks as if they are doing the undercoat of the roofs and they have still to paint them blue which is the postcard view of Santorini.
We took the cable car up and down thus avoiding the perils of the donkeys and lots of steps. While at the top in Fira we made the mistake of admiring a gold and diamond necklace in a shop window. As usual when you are accosted by the sales assistant you do not get a straight answer to the question "How much is that necklace?" Suffice to say that Danuta was prevailed upon to try on the necklace, a beautiful 18k gold and diamond knot design. This was quickly removed from her neck when we found out the price, equated by us to the equivalent of two reasonably priced cars or 10 cruises. Even when the price was halved we made a hasty exit.
To calm my nerves after a lucky escape I had two coffees with my lunch - it was too early in the day to have a malt whisky.
After more walking about we decided it was time to head for the cable car to try to beat the rush back down to the quayside for the tender back to the ship. Fat chance there were plenty of others with the same idea.
Danuta's legs were very sore after walking up the the hills of Athens and Santorini on consecutive days so we had dinner, no dancing and an early night.
