Woke up in time for an early breakfast today as there was an excursion at 8.15 to Melk monastery which is still used by Benedictine monks. It is also a school for 900 children part funded by the government. There are three of the present monks teaching there plus lots of lay teachers provided by the government. Interesting building. As the monks are still living there they are trying to keep some of the old but have also commissioned some modern art to show they are not living only in the past but in the present and looking to the future. They have a huge scientific library of over 10000 books some older than the abbey itself right up to 2015. It can be used by anyone that can prove they are doing scientific research. Also obviously they have a church in the abbey. It is beautiful.
Now sailing down the Danube passing some picturesque towns and villages on way to Dürnstein.
Only had a short time in Dürnstein. The ruined castle on the hill is where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned.
Dürnstein must be in an inlet or on a tributary as we have just made a 180 degree turn to leave Dürnstein and continue down the Danube to Vienna.
Arrived Vienna just before dinner so after dinner went for a walk. Ended up at the funfair with the big wheel similar to the London Eye. Interesting to see it at night. Some of the rides looked really scary.
