Today we departed Grindelwald in Switzerland and drove for a few hours before stopping in Lichtenstein for lunch. We were in Vadez but it was nothing too exciting. We then passed through Austria on our way in to Germany. Thats 4 countries in one day, definately a record for us. Our stop was in Munich and we arrived there about 4ish. The awesome weather we have been having has now disappeared and it is cold & rainy, which looks like its going to continue for the next couple of days. At 5pm Tim took us on a walking tour into the city. It was only a short tour which started with watching the mechanical clock go off in the main square. They really know how to do town squares here in Europe. Really something that we will miss. We then had a bit of free time so wandered around for a little while looking at the buildings, which are pretty new as a result of the war. As the rain was still falling we grabbed some chocolates then sat & had a nice warming coffee with Kez & Janet (US). Then we met the group back in the square and all headed to Hofbrauhaus, a German beer hall. This was a crazy experience. 3 humungous floors of long tables full of big feeds & even bigger beers. Now you can buy your beer in a maximum of 1 litre steins. However you can get smaller steins, as long as they are 1 litre. So we all sat down on our table, ordered our beers, & proceeded to "Prost" (cheers) each other. This is a tradition in itself as you must say Prost to each other, bang your glasses together, then on the table, then gulp your beer, all whilst never breaking eye contact. Well as a big group you can imagine how much the night deteriorated. We did have dinner included so we got to experience tradition sausages & sauerkraut, together with soup & desert. 6 steins & a lot of noise later & I had to lead our drunk group home, culminating with Chandler (US) having a bit of a spew on the train. But that's all part of the fun. This was an amazing experience unlike anything we have ever experienced. These Germans know how to enjoy themselves. From the maidens carrying 10 steins at a time to Prosting & singing songs. This was unbelievable. Maybe I could become German. Hmmmm.....
