Neil's journey
So went to these tunnels yesterday in a place called Cu Chi. It was where the VC hid-out underground in South Vietnam to fight/resist the americans. Pretty interesting place, right in the jungle too, there's no way they could have been found easily and the tunnels themselves are really long. You could crawl through some of them, the space is really small (even though its been widened for tourists now). I only managed about 50 yards before I had a minor panic attack caused by claustrophobia and had to come up, not helped by the girls in front discovering a scorpion and starting to scream...
The guide was a really interesting man too, he'd fought on the american side and clearly had a different opinion to all the museums I've visited. He had to go through something called 're-education', he was a of a philosopher really and just told everyone (as far as I could tell) to enjoy their lives while they can, which coming from him really makes you want to.
Did nothing today as a result of too much 'Saigon' beer - visited a market that sells loads of ex-military gear, bought some crap including a very fetching Vietnamese army hat (see photos). Judging by the laughter I think i was stung again....Crossing the road is a nightmare, I'm going to produce a guide for other tourists and add it on tomorrow when I get to the beach (Mui Ne). The guide yesterday told me that there were eight DEATHS a DAY on roads in Vietnam - its pretty scary. I wonder how this compares to the UK?
Incidentally, I seem to be staying in the penthouse suite of a budget hotel - I tried to pick up my key the other night and the woman insisted on giving me a different key. When I'd eventually persuaded her, she said 'wow' meaning either she thought I was monied or that I am a complete mug who bought the story about there 'not being any other rooms available.'
