Hi all, this week is going so fast, there has been more rain but sunshine too. However, it is definitely cooler, albeit above 30degrees. I can now manage on three showers a day! As you can see there are some horrible stories and sights, but perhaps for those people it is as well they know nothing different. It was wonderful spending the weekend with Donna and seeing so much of what she has accomplished by sheer hardswork and determination. She fundraises in her home area only of Victoria Australia, she talks well but is so passionate and always tells people what the money she is asking is for. She has many different appeals running at trhe same time. Her web site is Cambodian Kids Foundation if you are interested. I have been asked to come and do some vol work work with her and am definitely interested.
Where the new born twins live was unbelievable and if mum cannot produce enough milk the children will be fed on the water that rice was boiled in - consequently many young children look as though their hair is dyed but that lack of colour if from malnutrition.
Our children were supposed to register for state school today, but we are not sure how many did - it is run by teachers who exploit them so many cannot afford to go . Teachers ask for money if a child cannot afford a uniform, if they want to park their bike, if they need materials so maj don't go. Many Non Gov Org try to support but as yet it is a drop in the ocean. We are buying uniforms to help some of ours, but Grace House only has very limited financial resources - so if anyone fancies fund raising it would be greatly appreciated.
We have Fri 23 of as its a National holiday to celebrate their independence from the French and the in Oct it is Buddhist Festival to remember ancestors - Meryl and Jon are over then so I will have more time to spend with them
There are more vols here now - Oz and US but everyone is very nice and we have a good time, but we are all shattered after a day's work p- heat and trying to teach through a totally alien lang is hard work for all. It really helps the Khymer staff as their Eng still needs much support.
The Cambodians love education if they can afford it and many go to school from 6am til 10pm at night and all Sat and Sun but that is the lucky few who have sponsors. At Grace House all the staff attend classes everyday despite working full time.
May go on a Khymer cookery course at the weekend, but still much to do and see between recuperating from work and heat.
Have a good day - bedtime here, love to all, J
