Dunedin is Bob's favorite city in NZ. It is similar to San Francisco as it is a charming seaside city on steep hillsides; it even has the world’s steepest street, which I thought was in SF.
It is a university town, which makes it fun and dynamic. Dunedin was founded by Scottish settlers and its name is Celtic for Edinburgh. It has fine examples of Edwardian and Victorian architecture.
We avoided driving and parking in the "city centre" by taking a city bus that stopped right outside the campground. We went to an eight-sided street, called the Octagon, which marks the center of Dunedin. We walked around the Octagon, taking photos of the beautiful St Paul Cathedral, an Anglican Church, The Municipal Building, the Art Museum, many great shops and restaurants, and the statue of Robert Burns.
We walked about six blocks from the Octagon to go to the Otago Museum. On our way, a lady on the street stopped us and handed us a 2 for 1 coupon for coffee, so we had to stop at the Meridian for a great cup.
The Otago Museum is located on the campus of University of Otago. The museum has many exhibit halls on various topics including a great natural history section, Maori culture, Egyptian artifacts, Maritime history, Pacific Cultures, and an interactive science room. My favorite is the Discovery World Tropical Forest, which includes hundreds of live butterflies, fish, birds, and even tarantulas.
Then we walked back to the Octagon. We ate at a great Irish pub on the Octagon called the Craic (pronounced crack which is a traditional Irish term for banter, fun, entertainment and enjoyable conversation) before catching our bus for the trip to the campground.
