We woke up very early because we didn't want to miss a minute on Doubtful Sound. After a great breakfast we went up to the top deck to watch for wildlife and more photo ops. We sailed for awhile and enjoyed the scenery.
Then the Captain of the Navigator took us into a particularly beautiful cove surrounded by high mountains. We were told that we needed to find a comfortable spot because the Captain would treat us to "the sound of silence." He turned off the motor and generator and everyone was asked not to move or make any noise at all. It was magical. For five minutes we could hear only the music of bird song and waterfalls.
When we arrived back in Deep Cove, we met our bus and traveled back over Wilmot Pass and then across Lake Manapouri. We arrived back at our car about noon and said goodbye to our new friends.
We drove all the way back to Wanaka, but this time we took a different route from Queenstown. We drove over a very steep pass with many switchbacks. The view was stunning . We also drove through some old gold mining towns, reminding us of Colorado.
As experienced as we are driving through mountains, we definitely won't take the campervan over that pass when we come back through here later this month. I do think New Zealanders are fearless.
