We stopped by Tea Pot Land before we left Owaka. Someone really loves tea pots! We looked for one like Patty's, but couldn't find it there.
We then drove to the lighthouse at Nugget Point. To get to the trailhead, we had to drive a narrow and steep gravel road, and then to get to the lighthouse we had to hike up a narrow cliffside path that would have stopped my sisters' hearts, but it was so worth it.
The lighthouse sits on a promontory on top of a huge cliff which provides a beautiful ocean view. Even better, there are a lot of small islands that look like nuggets (thus the name) out in front of the cliff. Far below on the island rocks, many birds and fur seals enjoy the sun in safety.
We drove on through Kaka Point, what a name for a nice little town on a nice little beach. Then we reached Balclutha, the largest town in South Otago. It is located on the mighty Clutha River, the river which carries the most water of all New Zealand's rivers. Long ago the early settlers built an impressive arched concrete bridge over the Clutha. We had our picnic lunch on the banks of the river while listening to bagpipe music from across the river. Clutha is Gaelic for Clyde and was named after a river in Scotland, which probably explains the music.
After lunch, we drove through rolling hills; the road was like a roller coaster. Many sheep dotted the hillsides.
When we reached Milton, "The Town of Opportunity," the land became flatter and less scenic and the road became much more congested, evidence that this highway leads south from the bigger cities of Christchurch and Dunedin. However, it is still a rural and agricultural area.
Just before reaching Dunedin we passed lovely Lake Waihola where many boaters were enjoying their Sunday afternoon.
Our campground in Dunedin is about a ten minute walk to the beach. After setting up we took a walk; it is a very long stretch of sand with a great surf. Many young people were enjoying the water, although since the air temperature is only in the 60s, I imagine the water is way too cold for us. However, if it warms up in the next couple of days, we may just try it.
