We are at the Christchurch Airport. We have had a wonderful trip!!
Today was mostly spent packing and cleaning up the van. We had a nice lunch at the Red Beri. Fish 'n Chips one last time.
Then we met Rachel to turn in the van and checked in our luggage. For the next 24+ hours, we will be either sitting on a plane or sitting at an airport, not counting on when we negotiate customs in LA.
While doing laundry and getting ready to leave the campground, we got acquainted with two couples who are staying long term at the campground because their homes were damaged by the earthquake. Then, we learned that Rachel lost two homes in the earthquake. Yet, everyone we talked to seems to be taking it in stride. The insurance companies seem to be resisting paying what they should, yet those affected are certainly not going to sit around and whine. They are moving ahead with their lives, grateful for being able to work to start over.
The campervan worked well for us. We will be delighted to have a little more space, but the campervan certainly got us around the country. Bob said he had to learn to move in slow motion, because any quick moves were certain to result in bruises. This campervan had the luxury of having the option of a table up behind the driver's seat. Bob had to swivel the driver's seat, but that meant we didn't have to disassemble the bed every day in order to eat our meals. The campgrounds have nice communal kitchens, but we preferred to cook simple meals in the van. The small refrigerator meant we had to shop every couple of days.
We were able to each bring two suitcases, which enabled us to pack lots of camping gear which made our lives more comfortable. Little things like a sharp knife, a laundry basket, a table cover for our picnic table, beach towels, day packs, walking sticks, and a cheese slicer all came in handy.
No photos today, but I'll post some signs that bring back memories.
We have loved listening to New Zealanders talk. Their accents are charming, but even more are their expressions.
Good on ya!
