Bye Queenstown....off on the long drive to Dunedin. The town itself seems a bit dead after Queenstown- off course it does have Scottish origins and it is New Years Day - even jan 2nd is a holiday here. Finally the big event the girls have waited for - seeing penguins - we got really close to yellow eyed penguins on a nature tour of the peninsular, walking up the path we were taking to the beach. Then from the hide we saw chicks being fed by their parent and learning to walk. On the beach and in the waves Fur seals frolicked and a sea lion snoozed. Then we went to the fur seal colony and saw all the pups and the beach kings. Finally a trip to see the only mainland albatross nesting site in the world. Royal albatrosses glided all around us on the cliffs displaying for mates. It was pretty awesome, at first you think which of these white birds gliding over is an albatross as there are hundreds of gulls flying too and then you see one and you know just like when I saw a condor flying with turkey vultures Because its huge- a 3m wingspan - when gulls get close to them they look like toys. Added several other life birds at the marshes too....
