Fist stop of the day was Hokitika, the jade carving capital of New Zealand and Ellie was pretty disappointed that we didn't have enough time to have her beach rocks carved but we had to rush to our next stop to take a jet boat ride to see new Zealand's only nesting area for kotuku (white herons), although I was more excited to see the royal spoonbills (always thought spoonbills were very cool birds and these had a great hairdo as well as the funky bills). More birds in Franz Josef as Ellie, Lilly and I went to tour a wildlife centre (Ellie finds this spelling hilarious, she keeps trying to say 'cen tr') featuring NZ rarest type of kiwi- less than 400 left of them. As 95% of the chicks get eaten by sintroduced stoats, cats rats and dogs, they now raise all of them in captivity...
