We left Hokitika and headed for Glacier country. We were staying at Fox Glacier but stopped off at Franz Josef for a look on the way. Both towns are very small, we stopped off at one of the little cafes in Franz Josef for lunch then took a short walk to get some Glacier views. We got a little crazy and crossed the "Danger" line for a closer look!! We're super daredevils now we've been travelling for a while!! From there we headed to Fox Glacier where we would be staying. Our hostel, Ivory Towers (not Ivory nor a tower) was very nice. Whilst driving through the town we spotted our Danish friends Martin and Mette in their lesbian camper van. We spent the day with them. We drove to Lake Matheson, a Lake formed from the Glacier and to the lookout point where you could see the Glacier and Mount Cook. That night we went to one of the local pubs for dinner and had a few drinks. Met some of the crazy locals - and we mean crazy (but very nice)!! Had a really fun night mainly laughing at Martin asking stupid questions. That will be the last time we see Martin and Mette on this trip as we our going different ways around the country, so we said our farewells and left them to sleep in the cold campervan in the middle of the carpark - bless 'em! The next day we were due to walk on the Glacier but it was tipping it down!! So we decided to change our walk until the next day. We had to drive all the way to the next town to get cash as Fox Glacier is so small it has no cash machines - doh! Thes rest of the day was "job day," sorting out future hostels etc... The next morning we rose early to go on our wlak up the Glacier only to find it was STILL RAINING!! The town gets 5m of rain a year we later found out - we're pretty sure 4m of it was whilst we were there!! The walk was still on despite the weather so off we went in our hiking boots and walking sticks - really! Not a good day for fashion as the guide made us tuck our trousers into our hiking socks!! The walk was really good, walking on the Glacier was pretty tough, espcially due to the weather!! We were absolutely drenched but managed not to fall over on the ice which was a bonus!! As soon as we got to the bottom the sun came out - TYPICAL! Then it was a quick change and on with our travels...
