We arrived in Dunedin early evening, Bill had booked another holiday home for us to stay in. It was about 15mins from Dunedin in a small place called Warrington. Took us a while to find it, but when we did it was lovely. A wooden house right on the beach, had a wood burning fire and a balcony. Bill and Leah arrived shortly after us, that night the four of us had a couple of bottles of wine and a few rounds of Balderdash. Well what else would you expect from a group of 20 somethings?? The next day we went into Dunedin. Was a nice town, quite English. We found the steepest road in the world, so of course we had a bash at getting up it in our hire car, the Hyundai accent in the rain. We slowly reversed to get a good run up, we knew the rain wasn't going to help matters. There was a group of Chinese tourists by the side of the road eagerly awaiting our fate. James plunged his foot to the floor and off we went, the Hyundai roaring like a beast. It started off well, up we went, higher and higher, then the poor little Hyundai let out an almighty groan and we started to reverse - backwards. James tried his hardest to set the motion again but to no avail. We were defeated by a hill. As we slowly reversed passed the Chinese we all cheered our attempt (and laughed a little), all good fun. We had lunch in a little café and did some shopping. Leah bought a cook book and Bill bought a poker set, so that night guess what we did? That's right, cooked a meal from Leahs new book (Beef Curry) and played poker, Bill won grrrr. The next day James and Clare spent there first day apart since Feb 16th. James and Bill went to play golf in Dunedin, James won - hurrah. But the game of golf was the real winner as the boys quit at the 12th hole to go home for some wine. Not before going back to the steepest street and mastering it in Bills car. Clare and Leah went for a girly day of fun. First we tried to find the tallest tree in New Zealand but realised they were just driving round in circles - doh! Then we went on to Lanarch Castle and had tea and scones in the ballroom like proper geeks. We then took a very pretty drive to the peninsula were we saw more seals and an albatross. We arrived home after the boys who were already settled with their red wine. It was the Queens Birthday weekend, so a bank holiday in New Zealand so we decided to go out that night. Dunedin is famed for being a student town and a big night out. Firstly we went for tea in the "Best Restaurant in Town" as claimed by the boys who had booked it earlier that day! Not sure about the best, but we had a lovely three course meal with Bill managing to polish off 3 desserts - and he wonders why we have nicknamed him "Pattercakes!!" After dinner we headed into town to sample the banging night life. Unfortunately New Zealand is a little different to the UK on Bank Holidays, instead of all going out and getting smashed they all stay in - WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT!! We could only find two bars open, one was full of middle aged couples with Union Jack hats on dancing to old British rock songs. The other was a moody soul bar with a stupid bar man. So at 11.30pm we made our way home - rock and roll. The next morning we left our lovely holiday home. We went to a small town (we can't remember it's name!!) and went to a lovely fish restaurant. The place sold fresh fish they had caught that morning, was sooo nice. After dinner Leah and Bill made their way home to Christchurch, we headed to Omaru to see Penguins. We saw tons, they were so cute!! Also saw a sea lion finally! We stayed in a B&B that night, the couple were nice and brought us fresh bread in the morning. We packed up and went on our last long drive back to Christchurch where we will be staying until we leave for Fiji on Sunday.
