Claire's Travels
Well hello one and all!
You'll all be delighted to know that we arrived safe and sound (if not a little tired and bedraggled) in Auckland on the 20th. Rather interestingly we actually lost a day, the 19th, during our flight, and as we won't be flying home from New Zealand I dont think we will be getting it back. I feel I little cheated...but I think I'll get over it.
Anyway....we arrived at around 4am and thankfully we were allowed into our room at the hostal. Check-in is at 3pm but I think the guy at reception just looked at the state of us and probably thought that we desperately needed sleep.
We are staying on the 'Sanctuary' level of the hostal, which provides you with white fluffy towels and Aveda hair products on arrival. Oh and the bathrooms had hairdryers!!! After 2 months of not having one, I was very excited!!
Over the last four days we have visited the Auckland Museum which had a live Maori exhibition on. They entertained us with traditional dance and music, including the haka - it was really good!! We also visited the Sky Tower which you can see in quite a few of the photos. It is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere and the views of the city are amazing from the top.
One afternoon we decided to take a little trip to the Aquarium as it had been highly recommended in a lot of other journals. Unfortunately the shark tunnel had sprung a leak so that bit was closed off, but the rest of it was still open and it was half price so we trundled off to it....Well we must have been in there for a total of 30 mins max as all there was to see were a few penguins (not that amazing, lets me honest.) and some stingrays. Seriously that was it! The joke of it was, was that we waited longer for the free shuttle bus to take us back to town (the girl driving it said that she picked up every hour, but she decided to skip the time we had gone for so we had to wait over an hour! Great fun!)
Its strange coming from such densly populated countries in South America to New Zealand, which only has 5 million in total and 1.4 million of those live in Auckland!! Quite small really, isnt it?
Well we are off tomorrow...we join the Kiwi Experience, which is basically a bus that drives around New Zealand, stopping at various places and points depending on the route you have booked yourself onto. It should take us about 25 days to do this trip, which wil cover the 2 islands.
I'll be in touch throughout!
Chao for now! x x x
