Day 15- Last day in Venice-
San Marco Basilica - Although we grew to love Venice we felt we didn't need this last day and could have moved on to a different city. However, we made the best of the day. We had bought a 24 water bus pass the day before which entitled us go anywhere on the island by boat. We got dropped off at the bus station and hopped on a boat back to San Marco Square. The route took us up round the port so we got to see all the massive cruise liners that were in the harbour bit. When we got there, we went straight in the queue for the San Marco Basilica as it looked massive. After about half an hour we got in but we're told we had to cover up our legs (your allowed your phone but somehow legs are disrespectful?) so they gave us these what can only be described as table cloths to wrap round us as we walked round. I was super excited to see this church as I had read about it in that Dan Brown book 'Inferno' I had just finished. It was the most stunning one we have been in yet however the rude staff and nonsense with the legs had taken the shine off the whole experience. The place is under reconstruction so parts are covered in scaffolding which was unfortunate but once you got inside, you could truly appreciate the craftsmenship that has went into this amazing building. Everywhere you looked was mosaic and most of that in metallic gold. If you were allowed pictures, I would have taken loads but that was another rule.
Grand Canal- We then took a boat up the grand canal as we had 15 mins left of our pass and wanted to get our money's worth. Everywhere we went in Venice we were talking about the film the tourist with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp and how the race up a canal and get off at a posh hotel. Well this was the posh part. It was cool to see but you start to get sick of the stopping and starting of the boat so we hopped off just after the Rialto Bridge and went and got an ice cream! We sat on the canal and chilled for a while watching all the bustle go by and decided that we had had enough of Venice and headed back to the campsite. Of course, we stopped at some s***e shops and had a looky and in one shop CHVRCHES was playing! Made me miss Glasgow.
That night we had a lovely cheap supper from the lidls beside the campsite and ended up meeting in with a girl from Canada who has also been traveling. She gave us some tips on Rome and places to go when we were there which was really nice. She was cool! We went to bed as we were up early to catch a train to Rome the next morning.
