After a long sleepless night flight we arrive in Delhi Airport about 11am local time, greeted by a wall of heat. It was going to be a sweaty day and trip for that matter! We had a speedy and pretty much hassle free exit from the airport. However, on exiting the terminal we seemed unable to find any sings for the Metro. Our original plan being to get the Metro train to New Delhi Station and then make the short distance to our hotel from there. Eventually we found out that the Metro was closed, hence why all the signs had been covered up, so we decided to try the bus. This seemed pretty simple we got ourselves on the bus, and it was only 75 Rupees each, less than £1. Bargain. We soon realised we were the only non-Indians on the bus, all the other tourists seem to be getting on different busses, mainly marked 'Tourist'. After an interesting journey, involving lots of being starred at, we arrived at New Delhi Station, and made our way to find a taxi. We found a booth, agreed a price, refusing and extra 100 Rupee charge for Air conditioning. After all the hotel is only 5km away, it wont take that long… After at least 45 minutes we were still driving around trying to find our hotel. The driver had stopped twice to ask people and had phoned the Hotel twice for directions and we still seemed to be going around in circles. Sarah however was on the ball and spotted a sign for our hotel, and we ended up directing the rest of the way there. At last we could get out of this very hot taxi, only for the driver to try to charge us extra for our magical mystery tour. We are staying the first night in the Grand Park Inn Hotel, which is nice, clean and comfortable. Once we had settled in our room we head off out into the city to explore. Well it was an unsuccessful journey to say the least, we battled our way through Delhi traffic, it is just as bizarre and scary as everyone describes it. Only to find plenty of car mechanics and men sitting around on the streets, we soon decide to head back to the hotel for some advice. As luck would have it, there were 3 people in the lobby who were on the tour we were due to join later that evening. After some chatting Matt (from New Zealand) had been in Delhi a few days and knew his way around so he lead us to the local market, an eye opener indeed! Lots of pretty colours and friendly people contrasting with beggars and stray dogs. By the evening we meet the rest of the group, and our tour guide and head off out for our first authentic Indian meal. Very exciting, although we are told by Anna (our guide) not to eat too spicy too soon. Now totally shattered it is time for bed!
