We have entered the former French colony of Puducherry, although still very Indian there is a clear French influence here. Many of the signs here are in the Tamil language but also in French. This area also seems to be popular with tourists, here I have seen more foreigners in one area than anywhere else in India.
The highlight of visiting this area is its French bakeries, it has been a long time since we had 'real' bread. The shop was filled with baguettes and rolls, cakes and pastries. After a hearty lunch we explore the local sights, this is another town by the sea, so we head to the shore so see the statues. There are 2 statues here; one of a former governor of Puducherry Francois Dupleix and the other of Ghandi. The heat still seems the be growing and the past few days it has just been zapping our energy, so we decide to find some shade and an ice cream, then head to the Bharathi Park. This is a park unlike any other I have seen, it is almost British set out like a gated garden, with grass and benches and people everywhere relaxing. There are monuments, mounds and even a children's play area with swings and slides. The evening completed our food centred day with a steak dinner, not entirely sure what meat it was but it was tasty all the same. In India is it illegal to kill cows for meat as they are sacred animals, but in the south beef seems to appear on the menu. I believe this is usually Buffalo meat but the chance of finding out for sure is near impossible.
