On the road at 5 this morning, heading up to the Geyser Field. It was dark and cold as we left but soon the sun started to peek above the volcanoes to give a stunning light display. A few geysers and bubbling pools, several Andean Gulls were begging for food. One could take a dip in the hot spring but it was too much effort and insufficient time. We had breakfast cooked by our guide, a tasty scrambled egg sandwich, coffee and cookies. We drove on to an estuary to see the Giant Coots, Andean Geese and a few other species. It was an early day and back at the hotel in time for lunch. We checked out of our rooms but not leaving till 6 pm when we take the local night bus to La Serena. Since they don’t serve food on the bus, we brought stuff to nosh on for dinner and breakfast, as well as plenty of water. It was a half-cama bus meaning the seat go back but not all the way flat. It has a foot panel that comes down but because I’m short my feet just dangled so I didn’t use it. I did however get some sleep. Our accommodations for the eclipse tomorrow is in Tongoy about a 90 minute drive from La Serena and involved another bus. Tongoy is a lovely resort area with condos all facing the ocean. A nice restaurant down the beach served delicious shrimp risotto.
