We left Villamar early today with the jeeps for an interesting trip to Chile. We travelled through the Reserva Nacional Eduardo Avaroa, a beautiful area of lakes and volcanoes. First we arrive at the Laguna Colorada, a lake with a beautiful red color at 4278 meters altitude. The mineral-rich water attracts flamingos. The James Flamingo was a new bird for me. We then crossed a mountain range of almost 5000 meters, after which we ended up In the thermal area of Sol de Mañana with spouting geysers and simmering mud pool, nothing likeYellowstone.
After this break we pass the 'desert of Salvador Dalí'. The 'Rocas de Dalí' is reminiscent of the work of the famous Catalan painter: surreal shaped rocks in a volcanic desert.
We completed the border formalities and went through immigration and customs between Bolivia and Chile. Not too difficult but they did want to check all our luggage. Mostly interested in fruit. San Pedro lies at the foot of the almost 6000 meters high Licancabur volcano and forms a natural oasis in the Atacama desert, the driest desert in the world. Though they did get quite a bit of rain this spring. This oasis has been inhabited for many thousands of years and the village (less than 2000 inhabitants) has a rich history. San Pedro has a real colonial atmosphere, with buildings grouped around a central square, built from the natural building material adobe. We are staying at the Hotel Tambillo with rooms around a central courtyard. and we will be here for 3 nights. It is a very touristic town with many tour agencies, a few good restaurants and some shops.
