Today we started off by going to Arlington National cemetery. We walked to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and saw the changing of the guard occur. This was the first time I had ever seen it. During the changing of the guard it is a custom to be quiet and respectful so we had to stand up and stay silent. We learned if you want to be a guard of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier you have to have a perfect reputation in the army. We learned that there could never be another unknown soldier because of DNA testing. After the changing of the guard we learned more about the cemetery. In order to be buried there you have to be a veteran or be the immediate family of a veteran, or the president. We went to see John F. Kennedy's grave and his family's graves. Our tour guide really gave us a reality check and told us that the cemetery is expanding, but will have to stop at some time. After Arlington National cemetery we stopped at the U.S Marine Corps Statue for photos. Rumor has it that there are more hands than people on the statue, but we all counted and it was the right amount. After seeing the statue we went to Mt. Vernon Gardens and Estate. Here we got to see George Washington's slave quarters, his office, where the farms were, and some of his inventions. During the tours of the house it felt like the tour guides were rushing people so that more people could come in faster, which was a shame because they didn't really go into detail. I do still hope to come back to Mt. Vernon in the future and will have new appreciation that I will not have to plow fields at sunrise or cook in a super hot room in the summer to survive in my life. After Mt. Vernon we went to dinner and then to Alexandria for a ghost tour. This was a first for me, and I was excited for it. Sadly, the guide only told ghost stories that made little sense and we only went to three places.
