Today started off with a visit to the Smithsonian National Zoo. Everyone wanted to see the baby panda, Bao Bao. Next, people went to the otters that were all named after foods, except one that for some reason or another was named Kevin. They were all running around and swimming and playing and it was adorable. Everyone dispersed after that to look at what they wanted to see. My group saw the small mammals, the gorillas, and the elephants. After the zoo we went to the White House, where we actually saw the snipers guarding the White House, which was a first for everyone in the group. After about two minutes of constant waving we finally got one of them to wave back. We also saw a protest stand that has been running since the 70's that has always had a person on it, every hour of every day. It is a tradition for protestors to set up outside the White House. I tried talking to the lady at the little set up, but she either couldn't hear me or chose to ignore me. After this we went to dinner at Anna's Brick Oven and headed off for our last activity of the day, called "In Defense of our Liberty". In this activity we were drafted into the colonial army to help fight in the Revolutionary War. I was the flag holder so I was in the front and center of the group. The leaders fired muskets and yelled which imprinted what we had to do pretty clearly into our brains. After this I have a new appreciation for what all I have and all I don't have to do in todays times. I don't have to do things like keep a straight face as hundreds of soldiers run at me with bayonets, or keep marching as a friend or family member dies besides me. I am sad I'm leaving soon, but I'm glad I got to go on this trip.
