We were gone by 9.00am after a wonderful sleep and although it was cold and rainy it was still going to be an amazing day.
We stopped at all the lookouts and couldn't believe what we were seeing. The cliffs are amazing and the sea was frighteningly rough. I couldn’t imagine what would happen should anyone fall in, there’d definitely be no tomorrow. I always get itchy feet when I stand atop a cliff and I don’t know what that’s about but I’m sure as hell not going to jump!!!! I was hoping to see some whales but of course it’s not whale season time. If anyone had told me we’d be driving across the Nullarbor in December and it was cold and rainy I’d say they’d taken a wrong turn.
I can’t understand how anyone can say that this trip is boring. However I must confess that when I came across here in 1979/80 with two male friends it was so unbearably hot in the car that had NO air conditioning and they were on a mission to get to Perth in some sort of record, only stopped for fuel, I think I slept most of the way, just to cope. So for me this is the first time I’ve seen it for what it is one of Aussies great road trips. All I would say is take your time, there’s no need to hurry.
How many places in the world can you travel where for as far as the eye can see is an unobstructed view of the horizon? It isn’t flat and there are trees, I was shocked when we traversed Madura Pass, something I didn’t expect.
Perfect for travelling but the head wind did make it a big slow for us but nobody cares, talking on the two way makes it easy to let other travellers know that we’re going as fast as we can and for them to just pass on by. I love it!
We crossed the border just after midday and finally we were in WA I was so excited. It continued to rain all the way until we stopped near Caiguna.
We filled up with gas at Cocklebiddy (60c/litre) and the guy there gave us some vouchers for tea, coffee and a shower.
We pushed on to Caiguna where we enjoyed free cuppas and best of all a SHOWER. I hadn’t had one since Monday and Kimbo since Friday………pew!!!! Given that it’s Wednesday that’s long enough for me.
So at this point all is going well and we haven’t even had to worry about the heat, something that we thought would be a challenge.
We played backgammon tonight and I got thrashed 3/0 so I don’t want to talk about it!
