Arriving into Lisbon early at 7.30am after having breakfast in the dining car we made our way by metro to the Novotel to leave our bags before returning to town to see the sites. We first came across the Praca do Comercio with long important looking buildings lining three sides of the square and the fourth facing out to the water. Along the water we had to face the climb up through winding cobbled streets firstly to the 'Se' (Cathedral) and then further up to the Castle of St George. The castle was not nearly as interesting as others we had been to as it was really just the shell but the views over Lisbon were pretty amazing with some nice shaded seats to take it all in. Back down the road from the castle we had spotted a nice looking cafe/restaurant which we returned to for lunch. Still battling stomach pain but feeling hungry I tucked into a gorgeous lunch of homemade pasta with zucchini, bacon & onion and we were given a little platter of bread, olives & dips to start. It was one of the best meals we had had in a while. Next we boarded a Lisbon icon- one of the rattly ol trams which climb up and down the windy hills. It was a loop service so we stayed on for a loop and a bit before getting off at Figueira square to find a metro nearby and head back to the Novotel to check in and have an afternoon lounging by the pool and in our air conditioned room as it had got over 33 degrees today. For dinner we ate at the hotel restaurant which was an ok buffet but feeling pretty tired we were soon in bed for an early night.
