Today's stop was Bergen & being a larger city we were parked a little out of the very centre of town but just near the Bergenhus (castle & fort) which was our first stop for a look as we walked into town. Close by was the area Bergen is famous for - Bryggen. Dating from 1702 onwards the Bryggen wooden merchants buildings stand shoulder to shoulder in pastel colours facing out to the harbour. Thin lane-ways wind up through the slightly crooked rickety wooden buildings, now filled with artisan stores & plenty of souvenirs. The area was absolutely heaving with tourists as there were 5 cruise ships in town for the day- including the Celebrity infinity! This was very evident when we next headed to the Floibanen (funicular station) and the line extended half way down the street! It seemed to be moving ok & we were only taking it one way so we shuffled along until we got our ticket & waited for the next very modern looking funicular. Shooting up through a couple of tunnels it wasn't evident how steep the line went until near the top- it really was surprisingly vertical. We had amazing views over Bergen from the top, including all the cruise ships at the different docks as it was once again a brilliant blue sky day. Getting away from the crowds a bit we started the 40 min downhill walk through trees, ferns & some wildflowers- this was definitely troll country! We were glad we were walking down as it was quite steep with the last section zig-zagging through traditional old wooden houses. At the bottom we walked through the pedestrian mall & to the small lake/big pond where the trams terminated & they had a small food market set up. Our last stop before wandering back to the ship was the famous Torget fish market which was under huge umbrellas set up at the top of the harbour. The little platters of freshly cooked seafood on offer were really at ridiculous prices- about $30 for one salmon & fish skewer with salad! We were in search of some reindeer to taste & found some free tastes of reindeer & elk salami- expecting to have to pay a small fortune we managed to try it for free- take that expensive Norway!! Back on the ship we had a late lunch & sat on the deck as we sailed out of Bergen bound for the Shetland Islands. Of course we enjoyed another dinner in the restaurant, this time with a Chinese theme- spring rolls, hot & sour soup then a not very lemony lemon chicken with bland fried rice but a yummy mint chocolate cake to finish. Despite the clocks going back an hour tonight we made it an early night as we needed to be up early because being non-EU citizens we had to do immigration when we arrived in the morning- lucky us! Seemed a bit pointless when the ship departs & returns from the UK anyway but who is to argue with immigration officials.
