Today was a day trip day & we were going to Kilkenny. We walked up to the tram line and took the tram to Heuston station for the 10.15 train. The journey took about 1hr 25 & the train had free wifi- fantastic! Once we arrived we wandered down the narrow curved street lined with pubs in every second shop to the River Nore where we had a view of the castle to our left & the Smithwicks/Kilkenny brewery on the right. We took a side pedestrian street if shops (& more pubs) towards the brewery but were a little disappointed that they didn't even have a gift shop. Taking the same streets to the end we saw the cathedral & remains of part of the city walls then turning up a lane way we saw the Black Abbey with its stone coffins laid out at the from entrance from the Middle Ages. It was time for lunch & we chose Kytelers inn as it is one of Ireland's oldest pubs dating from the 13th century & established by Alice Kyteler who was accused of witchcraft in Europe's first witchcraft trial. Our lunch was tasty & washed down with a pint of Kilkenny. As we went to leave the pub it was raining but as soon as we put our jackets on of course it stopped & then became quite humid as we walked up & around Kilkenny Castle and the adjoining yards & Butler house. Having generally seen what we wanted to see in Kilkenny we headed back in the direction of the station taking a small detour to see a big square tower called Magdelen castle & the shopping centre adjoining the station for a coffee. We arrived to the station with plenty of time to make our 1530 train back to Dublin. Once back we took the tram back towards the hotel & grabbed some snacks from the Spar and had a quiet night in the hotel.
