Another trilling morning spend doing washing before we had to check out at noon. Our first stop was going inside Germany's biggest cathedral to check out the cavernous space which was amusingly intermittently disrupted by the sound of an angle grinder doing work down in the crypts- how's the serenity!! Next we worked up some energy to climb the 533 steps to the top of the cathedral tower. The steps wound up inside the southern tower tight enough to make you a little dizzy as you went. About half way was a small platform where you could see the massive bells which toll away on the hour as well as on the quarter which just about deafened us with its one chime whilst we were there. We got to the top & caught glimpses of the city through the gothic style decorative towers & gargoyles on the outside of the tower. Spiralling back down again it was time for lunch which ended up being a stop at Subway, well timed during a rain shower. After lunch we wandered along the Rhine checking out all the luxury river cruising boats in 'port' & the riverside area before boarding a short 1hr cruise ourself which went south past the old harbour area, now fancy apartments & museums, and under a number of bridges which cross the Rhine. After the river cruise we walked over the busiest railway bridge in the world which like the bridge in Paris is adorned with thousands of 'Love Padlocks'. For dinner we went to the Fruh Brewery Beer hall which retains the old wood panelled look of yesteryear where we both had a German sausage with fried potatoes & salad with a Kolsch or two of course. We had planned to spend a hour or so in the DB first class lounge at the train station but when we got there we were informed that even though we have a first class eurail pass we couldn't use the lounge, luckily we could still poach off their wifi from the normal waiting room next door. Our 21.25 train to Copenhagen was delayed by about 20 mins but when I did arrive we found our little cabin with its bunk beds & dinky bathroom and settled in as we head north with our complimentary red wine in hand.
