Brenton Kovacs's Travels
30th
It is so good to be back on foot again. You get to see so much more than driving, and its far less stressful. Shauna enjoyed the Souks yesterday and bought herself a few souvenirs. Today we decided to not leave the apartment till after lunch. One reason is its Friday, and most shops etc dont open or open after lunch time. Even the metro doesnt start till 1pm.
So its off to Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. The Dubai mall is the biggest mall in the world, and is undergoing major extensions to make it even bigger. Also the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. The metro is fast and gets us there in under 20 minutes, a lot faster than driving. The mall is just too big to walk around. 1,200 shops are just too many.
We take a break outside on the promenade where we can admire the Burj Khalifa. Also the mall has the Dubai fountains, a huge water show very similar to the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Its on at 6pm so we wander around the huge lake and find a nice grassed area to have a lie down and bask in the sun.
Its 6pm and the music fires up and so does the water show. The display only lasts for 3 minutes, which is rather disappointing. The next show is at 7pm so we head back inside the mall to get a bit to eat. We return for the 7pm show and the promenade is packed to capacity. And again it only runs for 3 minutes. We have been on or feet for most of the day so its back to the apartment to rest up. A very nice day was had by both of us.
31st, 1st, 2rd, 3rd
Spent the last few days seeing the huge malls and the old Souks. One night we went into the desert for a Bedouin Camp dinner and show. It was only $35 each and this included hotel pick and return, 100k round trip into the desert. Really good barbecue meats and plenty of good salads. Desert was just ok. The show was pretty average, the guy dancer was good, but the belly dancer was boring after 1 minute.
We were joined by some people from America and Syria who sat at our table. We exchanged some stories before we were all whisked away back to our hotels at 8pm. It was a good night.
Our flight to Bangkok is not till 11pm, so we are able to get a late check out, 2pm. We leave our bags at the hotel and head off to Deira mall as Shauna wants to do some last minute shopping. After we take a long stroll along Dubai Creek to the old souks where we get a bit to eat. I want to see the sunset as it will be our last and i am not disappointed.
So we are sitting in the lounge at Dubai airport waiting to board. We were lucky to get an upgrade to business class, for a small fee. Shauna is very happy as this is her first time in business class.
Looking back at our stay in the UAE, the weather was perfect, the accommodation was good, the drivers are bad, the traffic is bad, but we had a great time.
