Brenton Kovacs's Travels
The bus ride to Warsaw was comfortable, but the roads were not that good. Some parts it felt like we were going off road. But it did have something to do with road works along the way. It was a 8 hour trip in a half full bus, so one could stretch out a little.
On arriving into Warsaw, i had to make my way with the Metro and then a tram to my accommodation. This time its a apartment on the 14th floor in a block of apartments. The weather here is rather hot, 35c for today and Sunday. After that its back into the 20's. Much better.
Unfortunately for me every shop is closed today. Its celebrating 3 events, so everything must be closed except gas stations and of course McDonald's. This i know because my tea comes from the gas station which is right next to McDonalds. Turns out they had a really nice pre-made salad, and it was cheap. Baebara, the lady whose apartment i am staying in, leaves me some really nice smoked meats, so i have tea for the next week.
The old town and the main square are a really nice place to spend some time. The temperature has dropped to the mids 20's so it is so much nicer to walk. At the Palace there was a picture display of tragic events in and around Poland, namely the wars. It was quite a moving experience to see this.
Going back a few weeks i installed an app on my phone that monitors how far i walk each day. Up until a few days ago i had forgotten all about it. Well did i get a surprise when i looked at the data for each day. On average i walk about 20 kilometres a day. One day i managed 28ks. Now i was a little sceptical, so i used google maps to map where i had walked, and it was almost the same. And the interesting thing is that after walking 20ks or more, i did not feel tired. No wonder my shoes are wearing out so quickly.
I am staying across the road form the Jewish Cemetery. It is huge, 83 acres, and was extablished in 1806.It has been really run down and no maintenance at all. It was a very eerie place to be. Did not need to stay long. Each morning there were bus loads of tourists stopping to do a walk through.
The Pawiak Prison was just around the corner. It sounded like a rather nasty place to be if you had the misfortune of being locked up there. About 100,000 people were held here by the Gestapo.
A visit to Lazienki Park is a great way to spend a few hours. Beautiful park, but showing signs of lack of rain. As i head south i am loosing the lush green views, and it is being replaced by brown. It is certainly a lot less green here in Warsaw.
Well my time is up in Warsaw, and i now head further south to Krakow for a week.
