We left early this morning to drive through North Wales into Merseyside to visit the Recycling Discovery Centre at Gilmoss...... We have been trying to visit a recycling centre since the beginning of the year to try and understand what happens to all our rubbish at home and so this open day at the Veolia site in Merseyside was a good opportunity as Veolia operate similar recycling processes in Hampshire. It was interesting to see how the recycyling that goes into the bins at home is separated by the machinery (and by hand to check that there are no unexploded World War 2 bombs in the rubbish - this did happen apparently!) at the Materials Recovery Facility and then sent off to be recycled. We learnt what can be recycled and what can't (and what it gets turned into) so we now just need to find out where to take the rest of our rubbish that can't go into the bins at home but that's a project for another day! We headed North after our educational visit to arrive in a very wet and soggy Lake District this afternoon for another overnight drenching.
