It was impossible to stop taking photos today and I have far too many but Dubrovnik is a very photogenic city and a wonderful new view seemed to open with every turn we took.
We started the day by heading up in the cable car to the top of Mt Srd to enjoy the views down over the old city with the islands dotted in the turquoise sea beyond.
After a delicious morning coffee and cake at the top we headed into the Museum of the Homeland War 1991 - 1995 for some modern history... history that I can remember watching happening on the television and indeed the museum had clips from News at Ten of the bombing in Dubrovnik. It was a sobering hour or so spent wondering round and once again trying to explain the "whys" of this war story to the children. The fort at the top of Mt Srd was the first line of defence for Dubrovnik and standing there looking out over the city, on a beautiful spring day, having watched the various video-clips we had just seen it was hard to imagine that this had only happened 25 years ago.
With the pictures still in our heads and many more questions to answer over the next few hours we headed back down to the old town to walk around the city walls and get lost in the maze of streets. This is a truly beautiful city, wonderfully preserved and restored following the damage in the 90s and even though the sun disappeared as we came down in the cable car we found it difficult to drag ourselves away - back to the campsite - exhausted today from lots of learning, lots of walking and lots of questioning.
