From Hill City, we drove past Mt. Rushmore and took some more photos, then did a quick driveby of Deadwood, which actually was surrounded by hills full of dead standing trees (called "stags" - Bethany note), then drove through the Spearfish Canyon on our way back north to I-90. From there we crossed into Wyoming, and an entire day of pretty boring scenery, to be honest. The one obvious exception was Devil's Tower, which was unbelievable. After an hour at Devil's Tower, we had a long drive south to our campsite at Terry's Bison Ranch. On the way south, we unfortunately made some road kill - we were on a two lane highway when something that resembled a very large squirrel crossed the road. There was oncoming traffic, so I couldn't swerve, so I just honked at it a few times. Bad move -- as soon as I hit the horn the animal stood up on its hind legs and completely stopped, and just started looking at us as if it was thinking "What is this large red speeding object making this funny noise"...and then impact. Not pleasant. It took us a while to get over the incident, and I can still hear the thump of impact when I think about it. Terry's Bison Ranch has either seen some better days, or its not the visitor season, because the place was pretty empty, except for a few RVs. We wondered why there weren't any other people camping, until about 4am, when the winds picked up to the point that we felt like the only thing keeping the tent on the ground was our weight inside it. I actually reparked our car on the west side of the tent to try to block some of the wind, but it didn't make much of a difference. A few hours later, we managed to pack up our tent without any of it blowing away, and we were off to Colorado, a little bit tired. The highlights of the Ranch were the bison burgers they served in the restaurant, the camels grazing in the fields and the incredible lightning storm during the night, that preceded the high winds. We actually didn't get that close to any bison, other than on our plate, so that was a little disappointing.
