This morning we took the park drive again, this time in the daylight. Had another bison jam, saw a young coyote (we think) and then stopped in the road to see a pronghorn (antelope). The only other car we saw in the park that morning pulled us behind us and then honked at us to move. I resisted the urge to use a hand sign to show them they were "#1" and waved them past. It turned out to be an unmarked car driven by a ranger, who scolded us for stopping in the road and not pulling off to the side.. I reminded her that the road had signs telling drivers not to park off the road, which implied (at least to me) that it was okay to stop in the road. Oh yeah, also, there weren't ANY OTHER CARS on the 16 mile road that morning. ZERO!
We decided not to go to the South Unit of the park, and hit the road. We made informative stops at the Dakota Dinosaur Museum in Dickinson, ND and the National "Buffalo" Museum in Jamestown, ND where we took museum tours and contributed a few dollars to the North Dakota economy. The dinosaur museum was decent and showed us that the area we drove through before has yielded a ton of dinosaur fossils. The "Buffalo" museum, despite being obviously misnamed, was pretty cool. They had their own free range bison herd, including an albino bison (above), and exhibits on the history of bison in the US, how people killed the herd from 40 million to a few hundred in less than 100 years, and how the herd has been increased to over 100,000. They had a map of the distribution of bison in North America, and we're pretty sure they showed the bison in Potosi, Missouri (yeah, Sayersbrook!).
Later, we passed through Fargo and into Minnesota (state number # for Bethany) where we saw .37% of the state's lakes. It actually was a pretty drive on the way to St. Cloud, where we gave up on driving for the night. We had dinner at the Granite City Brewery. Bethany had the Northern Lights beer, which had a better name than taste.
