As much fun as it was being in the sun and drinking all day yesterday, we were excited to get out and do some more activities today. We booked an excursion where we got to do three different things, we chose a cave hike, a swim in an underground natural pool, and a visit to a man-made waterfall, and drive along the coast to see a different part of the Caribbean Sea.
Today was yet another early day, but not too bad. Still had time to eat a good breakfast and catch our ride. We started out on a cave hike.
We first had to put our helmets, then hiked a pretty far ways up a cliff, then went underground (via stairs, thank goodness) to the Cueva Iguabonita. This was a super fun experience. We got to learn about the natives of the Island, about local wildlife including plants, trees, etc. The cave was completely dark so we all had head lamps and the guides had bigger lights. We learned about the natural formations of the cave, and even saw bats!!! I thought they were super cute! We also saw this hideous scorpion spider thing that scared the crap out of me. One of our guides thought it was funny to brush my leg and make me think it was the spider thing, I freaked out! But it was pretty funny. There was plenty of photo ops, and we got great exercise. Which was good, because just like last night we had two dinners, well, our excursion provided us with two lunches today. So it was good to get some cardio in. ;)
After lunch #1, we went to the underground pool. This was especially awesome, because we were the only two who chose to see this one, so we got our own guide, and a private tour and private swim! They have this really popular cenote they call the Blue Hole, which is in the same area, and TONS of people went to that one. We didn't even know it would work out that way, so it was even more cool! Our tour guide, Angel that took us down into the cave took us to see this too. It was called the Cenote Indigena Las Ondas. It is a natural pool made of fresh water, and is crystal clear. The water and cave is only blue because of the added lights, but that made it look so amazing! And even better that we were the only two down there. So often when you see things like this it is just people everywhere. So the private aspect was super special. We talked to some people from our cave hike later that went to the blue hole and we told them we were the only ones at our Cenote, and they said they were so jealous that theirs was just packed with people.
After our swim, we ate our second lunch (yes, second lunch) and got ready for our final excursion. This included an off-road ride to a beautiful viewpoint of the Caribbean Sea. Our hotel is on the Atlantic Ocean still, so it is pretty cool to get to see a different part of the Island. We also got to see a replica of what a house on the countryside would look like, and then finished it off with a dip in a waterfall. This was not a natural waterfall, but still beautiful and very refreshing.
We then headed back to our resort, cleaned up, and ate our last dinners for our last night here. Yes, I said dinners. Although we had a valid excuse this time. The restaurant we booked was a Dominican Cuisine restaurant, they had very little for me to eat there. So we hit the buffet so I could have a larger dinner.
Our intent was to pack before bed, but it was such a long day. Our plan is to wake up early, enjoy some time on the beach one more time, eat one last delicious breakfast at the buffet, then pack up and get ready to leave. The last night is always sad, but since we have Winnie waiting for us back in California, when our trips end, we get pretty excited to come home.
