We arrived early to the port of Piraeus to catch our overnight ferry to Santorini, only to find it had been delayed for 2 hours. So we settled in for a 4 hour wait. When it finally arrived, chugging a huge line of deisel smoke behind it, it took another hour to offload everything - including 4 oil tankers and a semi - and then finally at 9pm we took off (it was originally meant to leave at 5pm!). On board it really wasn't what it said it was on the website... expecting a pool, bar and basically a little cruise ship we got an empty pool, very basic bar and a very heavy deisel smell that seemed to be everywhere... and we had 13 hours to enjoy it all... Yeah! We did have a cabin but it really wasn't that much better than the deck or lounges. Oh well... at least we got the experience We learnt later that this particular ferry company was probably the worst.
We finally arrived into santorini at 9.30am, our skin all sticky from a mixture of the deisel and sea salt, and we're picked up by our hotel in the main town of Fira. Once in town we decided to hire a bike to get around and picked up a 4 wheel ATV and headed off to the town of Oia, which is pretty much your postcard area of the island. It was beautiful. The whole island was beautiful, extremely blue water, white buildings and rocky cliffs made it so different to anything we had seen before. Even the black sand beaches were nice. Especially pretty was the red beach, named so because of its red cliffs. The water was so clear and blue it was just stunning.
After the first night we headed to a different accomodation at Akrotiri on the other side of the island. Getting there was a bit difficult since there were no taxis available - we tried boooking the night before - and the bus only takes you to the main town but the hotel is still quite far away. We had the bike but it couldn't take us both with our bags so in the end Bec caught the bus and Kane followed on the bike. Unfortunately the bus was packed, so much so that Bec missed the stop and ended up at the beach... but she eventually found her way back.
The hotel at akrotiri was gorgeous! White buildings, Caldera view and an infinity pool... aahh! Our apartment also had a fantastic view from its balcony and with a barfridge we were able to enjoy many a cold beverage relaxing as the sun set. The rest of our time here was spent swimming, sunbaking, resting and drinking... what more could you want.
After 4 nights feeling completely rejuvenated we now start the final leg and head back to Athens, then make our way to Milan, back to Zurich, Hong Kong then home.
