Retired & Traveling
We began our day by walking over to one of the most famous churches in Palermo. You can really see the Arab influence in the architecture, it's quite impressive. I tried to limit how many different areas I took pictures of because you could literally take hundreds and not capture everything there is to see!! We bought a ticket to see all the different areas, which included a climb to the top, the crypts, and the tombs. The stairs to the top were much deeper than normal stairs, winding in a tight circle and were stone, and since I've been sick, it was a challenge for me. I think it was about 127 all together...I made it but was sure happy to see the roof! The view was very good but wouldn't you know, it was a hazy day, so the water was kind of washed out. The City Sightseeing bus stop was nearby, we got on and off we went. It basically took us around the city, most places we had already been, but we did get to see some other sights we hadn't previously seen. We bought an extra ticket to visit Monreale, which is a village located up on one of the mountains surrounding Palermo. There is a huge Duomo there which is enormous and sits on the edge of the mountain overlooking Palermo. The interior is completely covered in gold! Our guide from the other day told us about it and she wasn't exaggerating when she said how much gold is there. I tried to take pictures, but again--they don't do it justice. One side note--at one of the stops, Rich was having a mini-freak-out moment, can't find his hat. I looked at him like he was nuts, cause it was on his head!! I laughed so hard, I thought I'd wet myself! He said he guessed he'd gotten used to it. I'm still chuckling! We had some time to kill before the next bus back to Palermo, so bought some lunch and enjoyed eating outside. I was longing for a salad, but this place only had bread-type items. I'm a little tired of paninis and pizza--want some veggies! LOL It got very warm today--87--and sitting in the open air bus at stop lights was HOT. We got off at the Capo Market so I could buy some fresh produce. I got a big head of romaine lettuce, several fresh tomatoes, and a LARGE container of strawberries all for €2.50!! I was hesitant to buy much more since we leave in a couple more days. After we cooled down and ate, we ventured back out and found a gelato place that Marco had told us about on our food tour. It was about a 20 minute walk from the apartment, so I indulged and had some, too. Yum!! The streets were packed with people strolling along, they close down the Main Street near us every day for some reason.
